type='text'>Do you remember the tv show "The Scene" ?

If you remember "The Scene" then you must be from Detroit. "The Scene" was the premiere show to watch growing up in Motown. When I saw the group on facebook, it brought back so many great memories of growing up on Dexter in Detroit. I had to google the show and low and behold there's a "The Scene" website.

Everyday at six o'clock, I was in front of the television waiting for Nat Morris to turn Motown into Geektown and watch the party begin. My entire family loved to watch the show and it was where we all got our dances from..the jit, the smurf, the whop and of course the perculator. We all had our favorite dancers, mine were Cheryl Peoples and Fast Freddy. We even knew all of the commercials, my favorite went like this:

"Girl, I went over to yo' house and them roaches was everywhere."

I can't remember the company now, but that used to crack me up each and every time it aired. I used to dream of dancing on "The Scene", but I was too young and of course granny would have never allowed that. If the words and the video below move you, then you are true Detroiter.

"Sugar is sugar and salt is salt, if you didn't get off today....It's not our Fault!!!"
<br Crocheting has become the "in" thing with the girls of Austin Road Elementary in Ellenwood, Georgia. Ms. Landers started the club a couple of months back to teach crocheting and now the girls have become naturals at it. I'm so proud of Peri's new interest and it's very affordable. Each of these women have deep rooted issues within their lives that cause them to seem upset and constantly Bitter about life. The friend that each woman has in common is just the opposite and lives her life on a happier side of the road. All of the women come together in celebration of the friend's upcoming wedding. The story will have multiple narrators to give readers a glimpse into the lives of each the women.

I started writing this story after encountering so many Bitter people, but mostly due to some of the women I've come in contact with in the forms of bosses, neighbors, friends and family. Admittedly, I haven't always been filled with such optimism and happiness about life, but I can honestly say that I've never been just plain ole' Bitter about anything.

Do you know any Bitter people? Let me know what you think.

I will be posting excerpts soon from the book, so check back often....

Peace.

The speech

I felt so good when I awoke this morning after hearing such a wonderful speech last night by Barack Obama. I never really post or even talk about politics, but I never thought I'd see a black man set to become the President of the United States and reside in the White House either. All I can say is "wow".

Now it's time to get down to business, we finally know who all of the players are: Obama-Biden, McCain-Palin. So get ready for 60 plus days, full speed ahead of mean ads, unfeeling media torture, and of course harsh comments about each other and their plan.

"Let's get ready to rumble!" should be the new campaign theme song for Obama.

McCain pulled a rabbit out the hat when he added Gov Palin to the ticket. I'm not sure if this will steal the Hillary supporter votes from Barack, but it was a slick move on McCain's part. He isn't giving her supporters much credit in my opinion.

My vote is with Obama, not because he's a black man, but for the fact that I believe in him and this team. The sad part is that when he wins this historical race, his prize will be the toughest job in the world with the most difficult agenda that we as a nation have faced in decades. But, you gotta have faith!

Just my thoughts.........

Candy for My Soul is now available on Kindle!!!

I would like to take this time to announce that my novel, Candy for My Soul, has been added to the Kindle book list. Gotta help a brotha out sometimes!!!!!

My family and I saw "Hancock" yesterday. Unlike so many others, I actually enjoyed the movie. The plot was different than most of the Hero movies that I'm dragged to seeing by my husband and kids.

Wil Smith did a great acting job and I found my self laughing and gasping a lot at some of the crazy scenes. Especially, the prison scene...too funny.

All in all, it wasn't Wil Smith's best film, and maybe he won't reach his usual grand box office numbers, but I will check out the sequel because there most definitely will be a few to come.

One more thing, WS is quite FINE in this movie. I hope that the sequel bring him a FINE sista to cure his loneliness....lol

2008 BET Awards - thumbs up!!!

Everybody knows that I'm the Awards Show nut, and the BET Awards are always my top pick to watch.

The 2008 BET Awards got started with a sexy performance from Usher doing his hit "Love in the club", I enjoyed all that grinding going on up there...smile.

DL Hughley was funny and he wasn't holding back any punches either, but that's what the host is supposed to do. I thought his R Kelly joke was kinda funny, but the audience seemed to be afraid to laugh. He called Marvin Sapp..warren Sapp and didn't even know it was Ciara with chris Brown. Too funny.

"I Put On" was performed by Young Jeezy, but Kanye West took over the set when he took the mic. "I lost the only girl in the world who knew me best......" I was hyped right along with the crowd.

Keyshia Cole rocked some bad boots as she performed Sent from Heaven. It was good to see Lil' Kim come looking straight. Nefee and momma Cole showed up too.

I was saddened that so many of the winners were not there to accept their awards. I hope that this show becomes the precedent for Black entertainers and make it a point to attend.

Cuba Gooding Jr. knows he felt out of place, but Morris Chestnut and Nia Long looked really good.

I blinked and I thought Michael Jackson had taken the stage to do "Smooth Criminal"...but no, it was Ne-Yo doing his thang.
Not to get off track, but this morning I heard the diss track from Ne-Yo back at Chris Brown and let's just say the young boy CB needs to do his research before puttin' out a diss song. I actually like the song too. Alright Ne-Yo.

LL Cool J still makes me quiver whenever I see him. His arms and chest kept drawing my attention away from the show. Ashanti okay...........
Jennifer Hudson looked good, finally her stylist got it right. Jeez, and he wants to dress Michelle Obama? Right.

Toccarra, Lauren London and Jordan Sparks looked really nice too. But, Lil' Mama...wtf? And what happened to the body that Gabrielle Union used to have? Ugly Betty is over, get back to eating.

I was happy that Estelle and Chrisette M were nominated, but The Dream cd is off the chain. Don't sleep on this one.

One of my top performances of the night was Alicia Keys. She stole the show alone with her performance of “Teenage Love Affair” and her outfit OMG. Then she showed how much of a woman she was and shared the stage with not one, but three of the best female groups to date.

Let me give you a breakdown:
Alicia served as the extra member of SWV singing “I Get So Weak in the Knees.”
Then out comes En Vogue performing “Don’t Let Go…” Man, it was so good to see all of the girls together and they all looked beautiful. But, just when you thought she was done, Alicia joined T Boz & Chili and performed “Waterfalls.” Loved it!!!

The UniverSoul circus ringleader came out next, oops I mean, T-Pain. I had to get that joke out, but I love T-pain and all his many hooks. His performance was filled with most of his famous hooks and the artists who took them home. And I'm always glad to see Big Boi aka Daddy Phat Sacks. Now all I need is some Andre 3000.

Neicy Nash know she ought to be ashamed of herself for bringing those white kids on stage, but it was too funny.

I'm a huge UGK fan and I was almost brought to tears when Bun B hit the stage to accept the award for Video of the Year. I wanted Brian Barber to let him speak more, but it was the Video award I guess.
(R.I.P. Pimp C)

I've been hipped to Marvin Sapp for awhile now and I have my daughters' dance teacher to thank for that. When I tell you he was reaching out to the crowd with every word, you could see that most were really feeling the song. “Never Would Have Made It.” He also won the Best Gospel Artist Award.

Chris Brown put on a good performance, I like him a little more since he's growing up now. You know, it's alright now. He and Ciara, who I must say looked fabulous. Next time I'm working out, I'll picture her body to strive for. Their dance performance was top-notch and quite risqué. Chris' woman Rihanna clapped as she watched. I just loved how BET panned the camera to her for a reaction. Helps out the gossip sites.

Ok...in my opinion, hands down the Al Green tribute set was the best of the night. First, my girl Jill Scott can blow anything. I hope I can find her version on the web. Anthony Hamilton was great, but when I finally realized that Maxwell had come out of hiding. I almost fell over.

Next to top that, Al Green to the stage and turned the show out. My phone was ringing off the hook and I knew it was my mom. Not only did he receive the BET Lifetime Achievement Award, he sang two of his hits “Let’s Stay Together” & “Love and Happiness.” He had the young and the old singing right along with him.

I love Rihanna and that Prince cut really does it for her. She looked and sounded good. Now that I think about it, with her dress and Chris Brown's Mohawk, they seem to meld.

Queen Latifah looked nice as she presented Quincy Jones with the Humanitarian Award.
I couldn’t understand a word he was saying, but it may just be that I’m getting old too.

Ashanti got all giddy as she introduced her man, Mr. Nelly. Way to be cross-over once again and add Fergie. It was aiight.

I loved all the Barack Obama hype and I was shocked but pleased to hear the other artists acknowledge Lil’ Wayne's album sells. You don't have to like him, but obviously lots do. 1 Million sold….dang.

Sean “Diddy” Combs seems like he's working toward becoming the Sammie Davis, Rat Pack Member of our time. He cracks me up, but you gotta love him. He was a trip on the after party show too.

Lil’ Wayne closed the show out and it was quite a performance. I wasn't trying to be down with him or his daddy, but his new cd, The Carter III has some real nice cuts on it. My fav is Dr. Carter...how clever?

Great show. I'm still holding tight to the dream of actually being on the show and enjoying it someday in person. Hey, it's on my vision board, isn't that what Oprah told us to do.

I'm kidding.

Since February

Readers and friends,

Hey, it's great to find you here. So many things have gone on since my last post, which was some time ago during Oscar season. Oh well, I've been busy just know that.

Since February, I've obtained a literary agent and within two months of having her she decides to get out of the business. So, I've told myself maybe that union just wasn't meant to be.

Candy for My Soul, has been selling steadily on amazon.com and even picked up momentum on target.com of all places. They must have found out how much money I actually spend in Tar-get'.
I've been busy with my girls, but I've managed to squeeze in sometime to write. First, for all of you who are wondering...I have not completed the sequel to She'll Learn. For some reason the beginning just doesn't feel right to me and I've put it aside until I get it flowing.

I've been working on "Inner Bitter" is about 43-year old Fatima who's never been married and has two kids. She has let her life be consumed by raising her children, then when its time to let them go away to school, she realizes how lonely and bitter she has become. Fatima goes through a lot of soul searching to figure out why she's alone and then she meets a special man who tries to break down the barrier she's built around herself. Bitterness and loneliness have become apart of her, but will love be able to break through?

And, "Letter to the church" is about a small town and one of the town's largest churches. The small town has been turned upside down by the delivery of a letter to the Pastor of the church dishing dirt on the entire town. In my story I take the drama up a notch, this story I think will be the one to put me on the map so stay tuned.

I'd love to hear from you, so hit me up at sb_staples@yahoo.com.

The 2008 Oscar Wrap-up

I'm a huge movie fan, and for those that truly know me know that I love to watch the Oscars. I'm not so fanatic that I throw Oscar parties or anything like that, but my mom and circle of friends call each other back and forth during the red carpet and show to swap likes and dislikes. The show is usually really long and drawn out, but this year it seemed to be more subtle and flowed with a new found ease.

I give credit to John Stewart for his laid back demeanor and jokes at the cost of the stars, they helped keep the show moving right along. I got a kick out of the baby award, but they left off Halle from the list. I love that the producers and the host decided to give another chance to the lady in the duet who'd won for best song. The clothes and glamour were at a modest level this year, no one was the greatest and no one was really that bad. I am too upset that Kojo on ET gave Jennifer Hudson the Worst dressed of the evening. Whatever, I thought she looked good. My favorite of the evening was Jennifer Garner's dress, very classy.

Being that it was the 80th academy awards ceremony I can understand, an agree, that a little celebration and more homage than average is in order. The many montages were pretty nice but it was so obvious that the many times that Whoopi hosted the event were left out. WTF? I loved Billy Crystal as the host, but enjoyed Whoopi just that much more.

On a good note, it was great to see the 11-year-old girl from Georgia do her thang during the Best Song performance. She has a great voice at such a young age. What a plug for the Nintendo Wii System, this was subliminal advertisement at its finest!

Sorry, Ruby Dee....I was pulling for you.

A proud mommy moment.........

Today, I attended the Straight "A" breakfast in honor of my 9 yr old daughter Peri (left with Principal McNeely) and 10 other 4th and 5th grade students. Getting straight "A's" nowadays is a big deal and I was so proud of my daughter, the eldest of our three daughters. I couldn't have asked for a better example for Sanai (5) and Piper (1....2 soon).

I entered Keidan elementary school in Detroit each morning passing the plaque that proudly displayed my mother's name as the only student to receive straight "A's" during her years there. Whoa!!! This was something that I never accomplished during my years at Keidan, so in a strange way it felt good to see my daughter receive such an honor.
It was a proud mommy moment, I pray for many more days like this.

The Oscar nominations are in.................

Well, I was disappointed once again to see that Denzel didn’t get a nod for either of his great roles in American Gangster or The Great Debaters. I have such a feeling deep inside of me that things are getting ready to starting coming to fruition in my life. I self-published my second book last year, Candy for My Soul, in hopes of creating a buzz for myself in my quest to land a literary agent and book deal. So far so good, I can hear the buzzing on the streets and on the web.

Will my two books be sold soon? Stay tuned.

Drumroll pleeez..............

The wait is finally over.....
Candy for My Soul by Sybil Barkley-Staples

Addicted to a drug or alcohol? New York was great and then some. I arrived friday evening with a friend to a rainy sky and dreary looks on the faces of people rushing through Manhattan. Our hotel was smack in the middle of Times Square giving us a fly view of all the huge ads and play marquees crowding the downtown view. I got the chance to hang out at the 40/40 Club (http://www.the4040club.com) and was given a full tour by a waitress...she was great by the way. We felt like VIPs as we entered each of the private rooms upstairs away from the regular crowd. The Cognac and Cigar room was sweet as was the Sports room which is Jay's favorite and I could see why with all the valuable sports paraphenalia he's acquired to adorn the walls. I was in total awe of Michael Jordans signed jersey. I got a real kick during our tour when our hostess pointed to the pool table in the center of the sports room letting us know that this was the very spot that Beyonce cut her birthday cake. I almost cracked up from the seriousness. The spot was all that, but it wasn't the type of place we were looking for. We found it just around the corner from our hotel at Jade's Terrace. It was the place to be on a friday night, so happened to be one of the Rough Ryders b-day and the place was packed. It felt good to be "chosen" to enter the club after being drenched in the pouring rain just outside. But, this was New York and it was well worth it. I found a new fav song in the club......"Ballin'" LOL I just love when the entire club stops to take an imaginary shot. Ballin'....swish.
On saturday, we caught the subway and shopped til we dropped in ChinaTown aka Bootleg Nation. I felt like a spy in another country as we were whisked through the backs of buildings and inside dark stairwells all for the sake of purchasing a knock-off Gucci or Coach bag. It was like bargaining with a car salesman over and over again all day. I only wished I had more time to shop!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Color Purple was even more than I could have imagined. Alice Walker must have been given carte blanche while writing the play, she wrapped up every little detail left undone by the book or the movie. I won't give the play away, but I will say that I truly enjoyed the play and the cast was awesome.

After the play, I went back to the hotel change out of the boots that were so tight that they were making my teeth start to hurt. They were sharp as hell though...LOL
The BB King Restaurant and Lounge is where we ended up and it was alright, at least the food was good. I was saddened to hear that BB King doesn't even own the club, a group of Jewish businessman own and run the club as they please.

I had a wonderful time in the NY and I cant wait to go back someday.

New baby girl!!!

I’ve been away for awhile getting my head straight after giving birth to our third daughter, Piper Shanell Staples. My other daughters, Peri and Sanai love their new baby sister, but Sanai has taken on the nickname “Jan Brady” given to her by myself. I can already see traces of feeling slighted by the attention to the baby and the needs of her older sister. I had a nice maternity leave…10 weeks away from my real job, it was the break I needed. Well, if you consider that a break. I managed to meet some goals that I set for myself. I finished the edits and rewrites to my second novel, Candy for My Soul. Things have changed drastically in my life, I am 5 1/2 months pregnant with daughter number three and we couldn't be happier. My oldest daughter, Peri (6), is more excited about being able to get her own room and Sanai (2) just has no idea of what's going on.

I have finished Candy for My Soul and now I am searching for an editor to get it in shape for me. I pray that this book will take me to the big leagues and help me land that publishing deal that I've been dreaming of.

I have started working on the sequel to She'll Learn and I have temporarily titled it Love & Learn, my mother likes that title. Readers who loved Indira, Maxine and Sydney are going to be pleasantly surprised and shocked by the twists and turns that they're lives take. I have also brought more to the characters of Clarissa, Anthony and Bruce. Some new characters with bring that needed spark to the plot.

Until next time......peace out!

National Black Arts Festival 2005

On Saturday, July 16th I had the pleasure of signing books at the National Black Arts Festival in Atlanta. It was a very nice event as usual and I was amazed to see so many people taking part in the literary and art festival.

I met lots of authors, some new and some veterans. Just to name a few Donna Hill, Electa Rome Parks, Thomas Green, Gammy String (Larry Fishburne purchased the movie rights to her novel, u go girl!), Jamise Dames and Donna Hill.

I was all smiles when Chuck D of Public Enemy walked through the doors reacting to my own infectious smile. He bought lots of books and let me know about his radio show - Slam Jamz. I met lots of editors and publishers, with the hopes of having my second novel Candy for My Soul published by a major publishing company. My book signing went really well and I made some great contacts. In the midst of working the room, I got to rub elbows with Fantasia, Blair Underwood, Spike Lee, Iman and a host of other authors and celebrities.

This weekend I have a booksigning at a McDonald's restaurant on Panola Rd. in Atlanta and Sunday I will be attending the VIBE Musicfest Workshops and doing plenty of networking.

Check out my pics BEA NY 2005 Pics

Peace,
Sybil

Getting ready for BEA 2005 in NY

With a little over a week left before BEA 2005 in New York, I feel sort of anxious and lost at the same time. My goal is to find an editor, an agent and even a publisher for my second novel Candy for My Soul.

My publicist Angie Pickett-Henderson has been hard at work trying to help me obtain this glorious goal of mines. I am really glad that she is on my team!

She'll Learn was re-released last November and to date it has been doing okay in the market. Today on amazon.com my ranking is 667,742. That's better than 2,000,092 which it was only two weeks ago. Even though its success has been due to the power word of mouth communication, I am too pleased and blessed.

My second novel Candy for my Soul is on the fire now and sizzling with fiery new characters and a great storyline:

Candy isn’t your average independent career driven woman. Candy Mitchell grew up around her father, the street savvy hustler known as Big Candy. He instilled in her that she needed to love like a man in order to keep her heart from ever being broken. This has ringed true for Candy and basically all of her empty relationships, until the day Derrick Ross her on and off boyfriend and best friend breaks off their relationship completely. Candy never realized how much she loved and cared for this man until the day he reluctantly let her go. Derrick is ready for so much more in his life, things like having a wife and kids and he wants these things with the woman he loves, Candy. But, Candy wants to concentrate on becoming the newest executive in the firm and isn’t ready for such a commitment. Derrick walks out of her life and the adventure begins when she meets her definition of a “grown man” in her new client Noble Johnson. To get over Derrick, Candy begins dating Noble and is taken on an unexpected wild ride.

Peace,
Sybil

October 2004 is the re-release date for She'll Learn

That's right, the wheels are in motion for the re-release of my debut novel She'll Learn published under writersandpoets. I am pleased with the decision to publish through WAP and look forward to seeing my new cover.

Other News:

I am hard at work on completing Candy for My Soul, Candy Mitchell is troubled and confused by love. She grew up loving and listening to her father who gave her the wrong impressions about it and from this has let the perfect man slip away from her. Unsure about marriage and commitment, Candy was dropped by her boyfriend Derrick Ross and taken on a whirlwind ride by Noble Johnson. The two men show her what it really is to be loved and what it really is to be used.

Visit my home website: www.geocities.com/sb_staples soon moving to www.sybilbstaples.com

BEA Chicago 2004

I am getting excited the closer the time comes for me to head to Chicago for the big conference.
